The Carhart notch is an elevation in the middle-frequency bone-conduction threshold of an ear with clinical otosclerosis. The study population consisted of 138 patients with clinical otosclerosis. Conventional air-conduction (AC) and bone-conduction (BC) and electric bone-conduction (EBC, with Audimax 500 audiometer) thresholds were measured 2 weeks before and 7 months after stapes surgery.

The term otosclerosis is something of a misnomer. A study that considered the Carhart notch as one of the factors affecting the postoperative hearing has concluded that stapedotomy is the procedure with the highest efficiency in the treatment of 2020-05-12 Objective: The hallmark of bone conduction audiometry in otosclerosis is the "Carhart notch."The mechanism for this phenomenon is still not clearly understood. The objective of this study was to describe the pattern of bone-conduction threshold responses preoperatively in patients with otosclerosis and to assess overclosure after laser-assisted stapedotomy.

2020-02-16 · The Carhart notch is a depression in the bone-conduction audiogram of patients with clinical otosclerosis. The middle frequencies from 0.5 to 2 kHz, which correspond to the resonance frequency of the middle ear, can be substantially improved following successful stapes surgery.

Change in the Mean Air–Bone Gap in Groups (Cþ) and (C ).a Group AGB 12 DAGB N SD a As first described in 1950 by Raymond Carhart, the audiometric profile of classic otosclerosis presumes a "Carhart Notch" (CN) most likely to be found at 2000 Hz. Since that time, there have been multiple reports in the literature reporting CNs likely to be distributed between 500 and 2000 Hz. Perez et al (2009) revisited the issue in a retrospective analysis.

This lecture deals with the concept behind the Carhart's notch which is found in the audiometry of otosclerosis. #carhart_notch #ent #otosclerosis Although there are divers articles within the filed of assessment of the accuracy of diagnostic methods of OME, surprisingly there are very few data published and a small number of researches explaining the accuracy of Carhart notch (CN) for diagnosis of OME cases and comparing the CN with abnormal tympanic membrane findings in binocular He even discovered a unique pattern on the audiogram that reveals otosclerosis (hardening of the middle ear bones), eponymously named the “Carhart notch.” Raymond Carhart’s Place in History Of history’s founding fathers, the name Raymond Carhart may not be as well known as Aristotle, Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein, or Charles Darwin.

Wiatr A(1), Składzień J(1), Strek P(1), Wiatr M(1). Author information: (1)Department of Otolaryngology, Jagiellonian University Medical College, Kraków, Poland. OBJECTIVE: Otosclerosis is an underlying disease of the bony labyrinth. Carhart attributed this phenomenon to "mechanical factors associated with stapedial fixation." The Carhart notch is not a true indication of "cochlear reserve" and this BC loss may be corrected by successful stapes surgery (Tonndorf, 1971). Carhart (1971) and Tonndorf (1971) provided a review of several theories to explain this phenomenon.
